Article:Music promotion websites versus social networking

GarageBand.com was a large online community of independent musicians and music fans. It was one of the most famous music promotion websites or music promotion companies on the Internet. After more then a decade ( June 2010),

garageband closed its doors. Garageband was so famous that more then a year after the shut down there are people still talking about this music service. Now,the brand name "garageband" is change to Apple's company, who's using the name for music software aplication. What in-fact is also a great help to write songs, but not to promote them.

Not only Garageband.com was shut down, other musician promotion giant that vanished was MP3.com. In 2003 they partnered with garageband.com, together with their 250,000 artists, and about 1.7 million songs in their database they teamed up with garageband. The rest of the sad story you already know.

What can be the reason for so many promoting companies are closing doors?

One of the reasons could be that they are the victims of their own success. They got a lot of publicity by doing many things for free. That grasp the attention of many songwriters, and other artists. Too much attention perhaps.

Another reason could be the copyrights. A company is always responsible for what people add to the website but have no view on all the stuff, and some of the music could be protected by copy law.

Third reason is probably the competition. There are so many social websites where you can promote your music. You-tube with music videos, and Myspace is also a giant that has took a big piece of the cake. Then twitter, facebook came, and everyone jumped on the facebook train because they were simply the biggest of all. Missing this train would be a disaster, some thought.

This speaks for itself. Competition is fierce on the world wide web, and when one died, another stands up, but without guarantee that he'll survive.

There are alternatives for facebook, and Myspace and we make a list below this text. This doesn't mean that you could set your money on many horses, and be a partner of more then one social networking site.
