The record labels! The preferred target for you?

Hello and welcome to the "Record Labels" page.

Labels are lead by the A&R reps. In human language this means 'Artist& Repertoir Representative', or the so called 'A&R scouts'. It's their job to find new acts while they are performing talents on gigs.

A word about the Record companies in general'.

There are 5 mayor record companies.Columbia, EMI,Sony,Universal and Virgin.

These mayor labels earn big money. After all, it's big business, isn't it? Most of the famous bands and artist are signed with these companies, so...

Lets target a record company that gives you more chances to be listened. Be sure that they looking for your style of music. For example, if you are in hard-rock or metal then don't send to a country or a dance label.Maybe it sounds stupid, but it happens all the time.

So, do some research before pitching out your demo package.

Targetting...What?

We'll start with the independent label companies.. It's just a waste of money and time to target the mayors, believe me. Also, you have to do some research before pitching out your demo submissions to the A&R Reps. What label they are and try tofind out who is the head of A&R (name) and what genre of music they are into.

If you're looking for

Record labels accepting demo submissions.

The facts...are!

First of all ,to get signed , your material must be strong (good)and your submission must look perfect. A jiffy bag with printed label. A typed promotion letter typed with your address. Make a last check for typo's, before sending out. Also, your CD must be properly labeled and must sound broadcast ready,if possible, of course.

Record labels love radio broadcast ready music ( with little or no work to be done).

Look pro be pro ! A statement that counts!

After you have send your promo package to the record company of your choice. You have to wait about 4 to 8 weeks before purchase them for an answer.

You Will do this by making a phone call. Ask for the person that you have send your demo submission to( the contact name if you got one). Then ask what they think about the Demo.

Now this can happen. They will blow you of .Or they will say that they didn't like the demo!Or they have not received your package or lost it!In any case , don't start to scream or insult the people on the other site of the line. Thank them for the time and hang up.

Try again in about six month to a year later. When you have new songs you can send them a package again. Maybe when you phone them , they had the chance to listen to your CD . If you stay friendly they maybe dig up your CD from under the dust and listen to it.

And if the recording is fantastic, you have a very good chance to get a contract after being scouted on one of your gigs, of course.

An A&R will never offer you a contract because you are such a nice guy/girl. If you think that, stop dreaming because we are living in a hard music business world, and not in a low budget movie.

Now, for the US record labels...

Never send unsolicited packages to US record labels. They simply will not accept it. And, in some states unsolicited mail is illegal too. So don't waste your money. Send them an e-mail, phone call for permission first, then send them your promotion demo.
